It is relaxing to curl up in the evening with a good book and a warm fire place, and read about places long ago and far away. It is also fun to curl up on a hot day in a hammock and a glass of cold lemonade, and do the same thing. But in the hurry-hurry days of the 1990’s, it isn’t always possible to do these small luxuries of life.
But in steps the miracle of modern technology. Now, via the Internet and today’s site, it is possible to enjoy the classics of American literature anytime, anywhere (fireplace and hammock are optional and not included). The site is called www.americanliterature. and is an exceptional collection of literature. Here you will find complete versions of “Winesburg, Ohio”, “The House of 7 Gables”, “The Last of the Mohicans”, and “A Christmas Carol”. It is possible to read them, as well as print them out. They are all public domain titles, so copyright infringement is not an issue here. There is also a Young Readers Library, and an Author Index. It is also possible to sign up for the web mailing list to be informed about any changes to the site.
Reading is a pastime that is a leisurely activity. At this site, a visit to the past is a welcome change to the pressures of daily life. Enjoy a stop here in the next few days, and see if I am right.
