Fred Allen Tribute Page
As we continue our visit with the Golden Age of Radio programs, today we visit a program that was rather daring for its day. It was tremendously funny, and the characters on it are remembered to this day.
It is called the Fred Allen Tribute Site, and is an online salute to (who else?) Fred Allen. His shows were located in Allen’s Alley, and were extremely funny and satirical. Among the characters he created were Senator Beauregard Claghorn (the basis for the Warner Brothers cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn), Falstaff Openshaw, Socrates Mulligan and the ever-popular John Doe. The impact on this program is hard to visualize today. Fred Allen was one of the best comedians to take to the air, and is best remembered for his on-the-air feud with tomorrows FamSite Golden Age Radio star. Any guesses who it might be? Tune in tomorrow, same time, same channel.
