I, Cringely

One of the best books I have ever read, fiction or non-fiction, was one called Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition, and Still Can’t Get a Date. It is a story of the computer industry, but is written in such a way that it is very entertaining. There is a slight irreverence for the whole computer world, but at the same time there is some real insight to how to make companies work in the present day and age.

The author of that book, Robert Cringely, is the subject of today’s site of the day. I, Cringely is his current project, and is an on-line column with his views and philosophy about where the world is going. For example, the main article is entitled “If at First You Don’t Succeed, Drive, Drive Again: Why Intel Is Reinventing the MMX”. There is also a meter representing Microsoft’s world domination (I call it the Micro-Soft-ometer), and an article on What Remains of Ye Olde Apple. There are back issues available, as well Bob’s Hot Spots (websites, what else), who he has had lunch with lately, and a chance to send him a baloney-gram (my word, not his).

Mr. Cringely’s philosophy is incredible. If you have seen the PBS special “Triumph of the Nerds”, you will know what I mean. Visit this site, and you will be as captivated with his opinions as I have been. BTW, Bob, when is your next book coming out?
