James Monroe Birthplace

Family Site of the Day has been conducting a tour of sites in our country that have special connections with the men who have lead us through, as Charles Dicken once said, the best of times, the worst of times. Today we continue that look with a visit to the birthplace of the fifth president of the United States.

James Monroe, a third-generation American, was born April 28th, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He served in the Revelutionary War under George Washington, studied law under Thomas Jefferson, US Senator and Governor of Virginia, and President of the United States. His term in office was characterized as the Era of Good Feelings, and was noted for being honest, hardworking, self-sacrificing, judicious, and trusting in democracy.
