MOMS

The birth of a child is a miraculous event. Having been physically present at my children’s births, I can only describe the experience as indescribable. The feeling a parent has holding their child for the first time is truly a special moment. My children had hospital deliveries, with a doctor and a few nurses, and I don’t know how many others. I was there physically, but mentally is another question. But there are other methods of child birthing that have existed for years, and are regaining in popularity today.

The site we are stopping at today it called MOMS, or Mid-Oregon Midwifery Services. It is located in Oregon, but the scope of the site if worldwide. There is a very informative article on the History of Midwifery, which not only gives just the facts, but also the pros and cons of considering this type of birthing experience. It describes the advantages and disadvantages of water births and home births for both the mother and child (and the father as well). A history of MOMS, as well as the services they offer are available here. It is a very informative and well-constructed site, a pleasure to visit.

In this day of HMOs and managed health care, where the main emphasis seems to be on money and not patient care, it is nice to see medical options like midwifery available. It is not mainstream, and it is not for everyone. But it is here, and has been here for centuries. And with organizations such as MOMS, it will continue for years.
