The family unit as many of us have known it has changed over the past half-century. The traditional one working father/one stay-at-home mother has, due to the transformation of our society, given way to single parents and other non-traditional living situations. Today’s FamSite explores one aspect of our changing lifestyle.

Called secondwives.net, it is an Internet online support group for parents that are the second parent in relationship, the so-called stepparent. Whether is it a yours, mine, or ours situation, bringing a new person into a fractured family can be hard for everyone. Here someone in that situation can find support via a newsletter and email, a free email account, contests, shopping tips, a whole menu of items that can help make this most difficult lifestyle adjustment easier.

So if you are involved in a situation like this, or know of someone, who is, then take a look at this site and share it around. It is a worthwhile one.

  1. Help!!! I love my 2 step children. I volunteer all of my spare time to the extra-cirricular events (that my husband and I sign them up for and pay for). Husband and ex have joint custody, the children are with us Wed-Sat one week and Wed-Sun the follow and alternate. This is the way the schedule has been for atleast 5 years. About twice a year his ex calls and doesn’t want the children spending any time with me in particular. Our daughter and I were to go on vacation while my husband and son are hunting next month, now the ex has told him that our daughter cannot go any where with me. If it is on his parenting time, can she limit what I do with the children with or without my husband? Also, on my husbands parenting time can we take vacation out of state without her permission as long as we give her the appropriate notice that is stated in the court order?

  2. My husband’s ex is just the same…she hates that his daughter spends time with me and tried to dictate how we spent our time. It did not work. In your own time, unless the children are coming to harm, she has no say over what you do with them.

  4. I have been going thru a really tough time this weekend. I try to do everything possible to make my fiancee happy. Sometimes it just doesn’t seem to be enough. All it takes is a phone call from his ex-wife and everything changes. “We have to give her more money.” “We have to do more with the kids.” It just seems like I have to come last in everything. Anyone out there got any advice?

  5. I’ve been married going on 5 years to my husband who has 4 kids and ex-wife. She was a housewife for 20 year and the financial arrangement he is tied until he’s 60 is just way too much for me to handle. My husband is a professinal technical engineer and makes a good living, but still has to run out every night to do a paper route to support her. It’s killing me and I don’t know how to handle it. That’s just scraping the surface. how do I go about finding a local support group in my area.
