The Time of Lincolns

Today was, when I was in grade school, a national holiday. It was one of two in the month of February, the other one being the 22nd. Both of those days celebrated two of the greatest Presidents our nation has ever had. Those holidays have since been consolidated into one day that we now call President’s Day. But today still marks the anniversary of one of the birth of one of those Presidents.

The site is called The Time of the Lincolns, and is a PBS site that compliments the corresponding program of the same name. Both the program and the site explore the era in which Abraham and Mary Lincoln were doing what the majority of Americans are doing today: raising a family, earning a living, and making a house into a home. The site looks at the conditions they lived under, such as slavery and the ongoing debate about states rights. You can view the maps of our country at that time, find out about the soldiers who fought the War Between the States, and even take a virtual tour of slave quarters on a southern plantation.
