Titanic

With the release of the much anticipated and costly film “Titanic”, there has been a renewed interest in this most heralded and tragic maritime disaster. It has been the subject of documentaries, books, and films, as well as countless school reports and newspaper articles. The basic facts of the event are well known to everyone; a seemingly unsinkable ship is fatally damaged on its maiden voyage. But this renewed interest seems to be acting as a magnet, drawing out long forgotten events that surrounded it, and placing them alongside the well knows ones.

Today’s family site is a visit to the Encyclopedia Britannica’s site, Titanic: A Special Exhibition. It is a factual account of the chronological side of the disaster, as well as insights to the human side as well. There are contemporary pictures of the ship, as it sits on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean today, mixed with original photos taken during it’s all too short life. There is a very good section on recommended reading, and a section devoted to other links on this subject.

A visit to this site is both educational and emotional. It is here that one can truly learn about one of the most famous disasters of all time, and that it is not only an event that occurred on a certain date. One will also learn that there were real people involved, and that gives it a little more meaning.
